It was one of the first radar stations built by the Germans in Northern Europe during World War II. The station is located near the village of Eggum on the island of Vestvågøy in Lofoten, Norway. The structure is circular, built of stones from glacial moraines and can be seen from a great distance. After the war, the Norwegian government had all the equipment taken away, and all that was left of the radar was a steel pivot.
German forces arrived in Egg in February 1941. After their arrival, they started to build a fortress and observation posts, but the radar was not built until 1944. The British Secret Service record states: Kvalhaugen Hill situated at 68°18'30'' N. lat. This is the location of the Freya radar, powered by diesels. The object is surrounded by two rows of barbed wire and landmines. The report also states that a few hundred metres to the west there is a false structure to confuse the enemy.
The fort can be reached by taking the E10 road to Bøstad. Before Bøstad one must turn onto the Fv831 road leading to the village of Eggum. After passing through the village of Eggum, the asphalt road ends and the fortress can be seen from here. It is a few hundred metres along a dirt road to the fortress. The approximate coordinates are 68°18'30.00 "N 13°39'10.00 "E.
