After the failures of the 20 tonne tank projects of Daimler Benz and Krupp, Oberbaurat Kniepkamp involved M.A.N. in the programme at the beginning of 1940.The latter had a draft of its tank design ready on 10.10.1940. The platform used the Schachtellaufwerk concept of interlaced running wheels and the suspension was, unlike its competitors Daimler Benz and Krupp (using leaf springs) using torsion bars. At the turn of 1940/41, M.A.N. received a new contract from WaPrüf 6 for a modified version of the VK 20.02 (M).
A company report M.A.N. dated 18 August 1941 states that one unfinished prototype is still awaiting delivery of the gearbox. The fate of this machine is unknown to me. The project was not completed, it evolved into the following projects VK 20.02 (M), VK 24.01 (M) and VK 30.01 (M).
