Based on their wartime experience, the Giandos brothers constructed a simple, low-manufacture submachine gun. The submachine gun has a simple, dynamic non-locking breech and fires from the open position. The cartridge is fired when the bolt reaches the forward position. The weapon is equipped with a mechanical safety, an L-shaped lever located behind the magazine well, which, if not depressed, locks the breech. The TZ 45 has a retractable shoulder rest, fixed sights, a perforated jacket protected barrel, and a stretch compensator.
Serial production began in the fall of 1945. 6,000 of these rather crudely machined weapons were produced, most of which were used by the post-war Italian army in battles against bands of bandits and army deserters terrorizing the population.

The TZ 45 was produced under license in Burma in the early 1950s, under the designation BA 52.
