T-54AM
In 1958, licensed production of the Soviet T-54A tank began at the Bumbar-Labedy factory in Gliwice, which was modified by Polish designers as the T-54AM in 1963. Production continued until the end of 1964, when it was replaced by licensed production of the T-55 type.
The Polish designers did not just produce a copy of the original model, but made a number of design changes - they managed to increase the amount of ammunition carried, used elements from the T-54B tank on the turret, installed power steering and clutches, improved the engine lubrication system and made compressed air starting more efficient. The engine compartment cover was changed, and the openings above the radiator louvers were given an oval shape. They increased the number of additional fuel tanks (from three to six), increasing the range to 830 km. A new auxiliary, called L-tank (after its shape) was installed in the space above the right waist in the section of the fuselage extension under the turret, two more above the left waist. The installation of the tanks entailed a change in the location and number of accessory and spare parts (ZIP) lockers. The locker located on the left side of the turret became a characteristic feature of the Polish tanks (later series had two lockers located here).
Based on the T-54AM, a commander's version was also produced, designated as T-54AD (D - dowodca), with an additional radio for which the designers enlarged the rear of the turret (T-54AD were intended for tank regimental commanders and their chiefs of staff).
Note: not to be confused with the Soviet modernized T-54AM tank, which was created by modernizing the T-54A in the 1970s.
