It must be remembered that the MP. 19 is not and never has been a production weapon, it was developed as a project of the Rheinmetall A.G. company for the same specification for which the MP 18 submachine gun was developed by the designer Bergman. The MP.19 was designed by Louis Stange, and because its construction dragged on the weapon was never ordered or introduced. After the end of WWI, sanctions were imposed on Germany which included the production of weapons and specifically submachine guns were not allowed in the army (they were only supplied to the police) so production never started. At the end of the 1920s, however, Rheinmetall managed to transfer some of the projects it had been working on in secret to a company it controlled in Switzerland, the Solothurn company, and among other weapons, the MP.19 submachine gun was transferred there in 1928, where it was put into production form and offered for sale under the designation S1-100. But the Solothurn company did not have sufficient capacity so the production was actually handed over to the Steyr company and a Steyr-Solothurn business consortium was formed to offer the weapon. Production ran in several calibers, from the 9x23 Steyr for the Austrian army (as the MP-30) to, for example, the 7.63 Mauser for China to the .45 for some countries in South America. For the Austrian army, the gun was later produced in 9 mm Para calibre and designated MP-34 (these were then used by the WH as MP-34ö)Orders were not only for the army, but also for example for the Portuguese Ministry of Finance and their National Bank. It should be remembered that the MP.19 designation is only for prototypes and not for established weapons.
