Constructed from 1927 as a so-called infantry gun (Infanterie Geschütz) by Rheinmetall-Borsig in Düsseldorf. The first guns entered service in 1932, the numeral 18 in the name refers to the year 1918 which is given for many German guns to circumvent the Treaty of Versailles which forbade the development of new weapons in Germany, many guns designed for the Reichswehr were therefore marked 1918 and passed off as older designs. This gun became one of the most widely used artillery weapons and supported troops as early as company level, as it was located as a reinforcement at battalion level. It routinely fired both direct fire and upper group angles and photos of it are known from all places where the Germans fought. There were two versions of the gun, one designed for hipotraction (i.e., horse-drawn) had spoked wheels and a different brake design, the other designed for pulling behind vehicles had wheels with tires and drum brakes.

Infantry gun to support attacking units (from our point of view it is a howitzer)
