Due to the lack of mobility and power of the 3.7 cm PaK L/45 towed guns of the German Panzerjäger-Abteilung, it was decided to create a mobile anti-tank vehicle (Ankov fighter). It was to be a vehicle that with its armament could threaten the most powerful French armoured opponent, the B1 bis tank. The platform of the vehicle was to be a sub-platform of the light tank Pz.Kpfw. I Ausf. B and its armament was to be a captured Czechoslovak 4.7 cm KPÚV vz. 38 (German designation 4.7 cm PaK(t)). The Alkett firm was commissioned to design this tank fighter.
The Skoda company received a contract from the German Waffenamt to produce these guns.
The contract for the armoured shields was awarded to Krupp of Essen (60 units) and Deutsche Edelstahlwerke AG of Hannover-Linden (72 units). Completion was entrusted to Alkett. This was the first production run of 132 vehicles of this fighter.
The Waffenamt accepted 30 fighters in 3/1940, 60 fighters in 4/1940 and 30 fighters in 5/1940. As the company Alkett did not have a pair of the missing guns it could not fulfill the contract. The next fighter was delivered in 9/1940 and the last of the contract only in 7/1941.
These tank fighters were to be armed with Pz.Jäg.Abt. 521 (Sfl.) and Pz.Jäg.Abt. 616 (Sfl.). Crew training was to take place at the Panzertruppen Schule in Wunsdorf (within the newly formed Pz.Jäg.Ersatzkompanie (Sfl.). The training was to be completed and the units were to be combat-ready by 15.4.1940. The next two units to be armed with these tank fighters were Pz.Jäg.Abt. 643 (Mot.) and Pz.Jäg.Abt. 670 (Mot.). The conversion and training of these units from towed gun units to self-propelled units was to be completed by 15 May 1940.
As of 23.4.1940, Pz.Jäg.Abt. 616 (Sfl.) had a tabulation of 27 tank fighters. It also had 27 fighters each of Pz.Jäg.Abt. 643 (Sfl.) and Pz.Jäg.Abt. 670 (Sfl.). The Pz.Jäg.Abt. 521 (Sfl.) received only 18 fighters. The units took part in the campaign in France.


On 19 September 1940, Krupp of Essen received a contract for the production of 70 protective shields for the additional production of these fighters (2nd Serie/La.S. 47).
Only 10 pieces went to Alkett, which assembled 10 fighters. The remaining production (60 units) was sent to Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz AG of Köln-Deutz, which took over the assembly of these vehicles. The Waffenamt reports delivery and acceptance of 10 units in 11/1940, 30 vehicles in 12/1940 and the remaining 30 vehicles in 2/1941. The vehicles of this series differed slightly from the first series. Apart from minor changes to the platform itself (armoured covers for the engine hatch openings), the biggest change was improved armour protection for the crew (7-piece armoured shield, compared to the 5-piece shield of the 1st series).
These tank fighters were to form the armament of the new (converted from Mot. S) Pz.Jäg.Abt. 529 (Sfl.) (rebadged from Pz.Jäg.Abt. 169) and Pz.Jäg.Abt. 605. Originally each Abteilung was to have two Kompanie, later expanded to three Kompanie. Each Kompanie had nine vehicles. The next unit to receive these vehicles was the LSSAH, which received nine vehicles on 15 March 1941. Another nine fighters were received on 15.4.1941 by the newly formed Lehr Brigade (mot.) 900. The units took part in the campaign in the USSR.
