SOV - IT-28 (mostní tank)

Work on the IT-28 engineer tank began in 1935, but the project was completed in late 1940, when the final form of the machine was accepted into the Soviet Army arsenal. A first batch of 55 units was ordered, but before serial production could begin the USSRwas invaded by Germanyand the production plant had to be evacuated. The order was cancelled and serial production did not start.

The T-28 (later T-28E) was chosen as the basis for the machine, from which the turrets were removed. In place of the front machine gun turrets, an armoured superstructure was created, with machine guns in the nose. A 4.2 tonne heavy, 13.3m long and 3.35m wide bridge was placed on top of the hull. This was to be used to bridge terrain obstacles up to a maximum width of 12.5m and a height difference of 4.5m for vehicles and tanks weighing up to 50 tonnes. Designs for extended bridge decks ranging from 12 - 48m were being worked on. The bridge-laying system did not require the crew to leave the tank's fighting compartment, but one crew member had to assist in loading the bridge, who had to be outside the tank. It took 1-3 minutes to lay the bridge, and 3-5 minutes to load the bridge onto the tank.
The tanks were to serve in engineer-tank units, where their table number was to be one command tank and three engineer tanks. Each machine was to have various additional equipment (mine clearing ram, winch, engineer power tools...).
