Service in the Russian Army and the Red Army :

At the beginning of World War I, a need arose in Russia for artillery material of great mass, which the Russian armaments factories were unable to meet. For this reason, Russia ordered a supply of 8-inch guns from the British firm Vickers, of which a total of 31 were delivered during 1916 (29 pieces) and 1917 (2 pieces). Another order was placed by the American firm Midvale Steel, which produced the howitzer under license. Here Risko ordered 100 howitzers, of which 41 were delivered during 1917. The howitzers were given the designation 8-inch howitzer vz. 1916 (or for howitzers shipped from the USA vz. 1917). The original British howitzers differed from the licensed American howitzers by the ploughshare, which was absent from the licensed production.

Howitzers that survived World War I and the subsequent Civil War continued to serve in the Red Army. By the end of 1921 there were a total of 59 203 mm calibre howitzers of foreign origin in Red Army units, most of which were Mk.VI. Due to the need for unification and a shortage of spare parts, the scarce and currently unrepairable armament was gradually phased out, and as of 01.08.1923, only 29 Mk.VI howitzers remained in heavy artillery units - 5 directly in use, 15 in common use and 9 in untouchable stocks. As the supply situation improved, so did the artillery material being repaired. As of 01.11.1936 there were 51 pieces of 203 mm howitzers in the Red Army, 1 of which was a training howitzer. Despite several planned modernization projects, none were carried out and the howitzers were in limited combat use until 1943.
