6-inch (152 mm) siege gun vz. 1910 was developed for the Russian Army by the French firm Schneider following a 1906 competition for the supply of heavy guns. In addition to Schneider, Russian firms - Obukhov Steel Works, Putilov Plant and Perm Plant, the British Armstrong and Vickers, the Austro-Hungarian Skoda, the German Krupp, the Swedish Bofors, and the French Saint-Chammond - entered the competition. Despite the strong competition, French Schneider was the favourite from the start, closely followed by German Krupp. In mid 1909, a prototype 152 mm cannon from Schneider arrived in Russia, and in October of the same year, a 152 mm prototype heavy cannon from Krupp arrived as well.

Both prototypes were subjected to practical tests at the Main Artillery Range - first, on 11.11.1909, the prototype of Krupp, followed from 01.05.1910 by Schneider. During the tests, a total of 365 shots were fired from the Krupp prototype and 317 from the Schneider prototype. The accuracy of both guns was roughly the same, but overall the Krupp prototype showed better ballistic results. Compared to the Schneider, it was 250 kg lighter and the Krupp gun also performed better in transport tests (the Schneider gun failed to complete the tests after several damages and had to be sent for repairs), but the commission inexplicably decided to favour the Schneider design in the end. The Schneider gun was introduced into the arsenal in 1910 as the 6-inch siege gun vz. 1910 (6-дм осадная пушка обр. 1910 г.).

The prototype returned to France for repairs after the tests were completed and was delivered back to Russia on 07.06.1912. From 07.07.1912 the semi underwent further tests on the polygon and on 13.08.1912 it was sent for repairs to the Putilov factory, which was traditionally supposed to provide the production by agreement with Schneider. From 13.11.1912 to 16.03.1913 the tests on the polygon continued again. The contract for the production of 56 guns was signed as early as 05.06.1912 at a price of 48000 rubles apiece. Serial production was to start within 12 months from the signing of the contract and delivery was to be completed within 22 months from the acceptance of the first piece into armament. Compared to the prototype, the serial guns had a higher and wider protective shield (increase in weight by 32.8 kg) made of thicker steel (from 6 to 7 mm - an increase in weight by another 32.8 kg). Further changes were made to the chassis, which delayed serial production by 12 months - the first serial gun was not delivered until 25.06.1914. The first 4 guns were assigned to the units in 02/1915.

In 1912 the Putilovsky závod received one more order for 152 mm cannons vz. 1910 in number of 17 pcs - from the Russian Navy, which was looking for a suitable weapon for arming mobile coastal batteries. These guns were to be adapted for automobile transport, which required further modifications to the design. As the plant was exhausted by the order for the ground troops, the delivery of the guns for the Navy was not expected until 01.07.1918.

As of 07.07.1915, 9 guns were delivered to the army, as of 01.01.1917 36 guns, as of 01.12.1917, 44 guns out of 51 guns produced were taken over by the army. By 19.05.1919 a total of 51 cannons were produced out of a total order of 56 pieces, the Navy order was not finally realized.

The first 8 guns, deployed to the front in the spring of 1915, were returned to the factory for repair in 10/1915, as there was damage to the breech draw gear. Design changes forced a two-month slowdown in production of the next guns. At the beginning of 1917, of the total cannon produced, 15 were destroyed in combat, the remaining 24 cannon were assigned to the Western Front (6 pieces) and the South-Western Front (18 pieces) as of 15/06/1917.

In 1926, 26 guns remained in the Red Army, of which 9 were in depots (8 unserviceable, requiring repair) and 17 with units. On 08.04.1926 a new set of 18 guns was ordered from the Red Putilovets plant (renamed Putilovsky plant). The first newly manufactured gun was delivered on 27.01.1927, as of 01.19.1928 a total of 16 guns had been delivered and the remaining two were taken delivery by the end of the year after test firings had been carried out. Another order for 23 guns was signed on 24.04.1928. The first gun was delivered on 30.11.1928 and by 01.10.1929 10 guns had been produced. During test firing one gun was damaged and the army returned it to the factory. As of 01.04.1930, 20 of the 23 cannons ordered had been delivered, with the last cannon already produced as a modernized 152 mm cannon vz.1910/30.

A total of 85 pieces of the 6-inch (152 mm) siege gun vz. 1910.
