40,6 mm Dyakonov rifle grenade launcher VGD


On March 8, 1916, a rifle grenade launcher designed by Sgt. 37 was demonstrated at the Officers' Rifle School weapons range. On December 24, 1916, military tests were conducted with the units of the Southwestern Front. They were very successful because its commander - General Brusilov - immediately requested the supply of 600,000 pieces of Dyakonov rifle grenades.

The "VGD" rifle grenade launcher was fired from the breech of a standard 7.62 mm Mosin rifle of 1891 model. The breech of the Dyakonov design was mounted on the end of the rifle barrel and consisted of a 41 mm thick-walled steel tube, slightly flared towards the muzzle with three internal grooves. In the second half of the 1920s, Diakonov upgraded the breech attachment for use on the Mosin vz.1891/30 rifle by applying a bayonet lock to the muzzle (similar to that of a standard bayonet).

The "VGD" rifle grenade launcher consists of an ogival-shaped metal body with a smooth or grooved surface, a firing tube in the grenade axis, and a bottom igniter. At the end of the firing tube is a thread on which is screwed a rotary adjusting ring with engraved marks for setting the igniter delay. By turning the adjusting ring against the projection on the grenade body, the length of the flame passage through the labyrinth channel with the black powder charge to the igniter is adjusted. When the rifle cartridge is fired, the projectile passes through the barrel and the firing tube. The pressure of the gases sweeps the grenade out of the firing pin and its temperature ignites the ignition mixture, which creates a flame and transfers it to the delay chamber formed by the black powder. When the delay device burns out, the flame initiates an ignition fuse which creates a detonation wave and transfers it to the explosive in the grenade body.

Packaging Each grenade is individually packed in a sealed metal case, 32 or 50 grenades are packed in a wooden case. The weight of the box for 50 grenades is 30kg."
