Brigadier General Henry Brewster Percy Lion Kennedy, C.M.G., D.S.O. was the son of Vice Admiral J. J. Kennedy, C.B. He was educated at Eton and enlisted at Sandhurst in 1897. He excelled in sport, representing England in ice hockey against Canada at Niagara. Late in 1898 he joined the 60th King's Royal Rifle Corps and went to South Africa to join the regiment at Wynberg. He took part in the Boer War, first with the Mounted Infantry, taking part in the action at Laing's Nek, Belfast and Lydenburg. Later he became aide-de-camp to General Pitcairn Campbell, and towards the end of the war served as messenger of messages to Lord Kitchener in Johannesburg.
In March 1902 he returned to Britain for his coronation. He then went to Malta, where he spent two years on fortress duty. He was transferred to Egypt, where he served until 1909. He continued to play sports, winning races such as the Egyptian Derby and once won all six races in Khartoum in one day. In March 1909 he returned home and was stationed at Aldershot. In November 1913 he was appointed adjutant of the 21st County of London (First Surrey Rifles). He served in this position until the outbreak of war.
In March 1915 he was sent to France and served in the trenches at Festubert. In August he was promoted to Company Commander with the rank of Temporary Lt. Colonel. He fought at Loos, Vimy and the Somme. In April 1917 he became commander of the 140th Infantry Brigade with the rank of Brigadier-General. He took part in actions at Messines, Bourlon Wood, Cambrai, Happy Valey, St. Pierre Vaast and the charge on Lille. He was often seen cycling between units and was on the front line daily. He was awarded the 3rd Class of the Order of St. Michael and St. George, the Distinguished Service Order, and received seven commendations in the order. He also received the French War Cross and two Portuguese Orders of the Tower and Sword.
Between the wars he served on the Rhine. At the beginning of the Second World War he was assigned to a committee of draining officers. He was soon appointed King's Messenger. This brought him to Dunkirk, from where he happily evacuated and was assigned to the BBC committee.
