A special infantry supply tank was designed in September 1917 to carry up to 50 infantrymen or 10 tons of supplies. It was the first tank designed specifically for transport tasks (in today's terms, an armoured personnel carrier), as until then vehicles with a similar purpose had been produced by modifying battle tanks (Mark I, Mark II and Mark IV), or artillery tractors. Production was handled by Armstrong Whitworth and was underway from June 1918. The cargo (transport compartment) was located in the centre of the vehicle, the engine compartment in the front. The timing gear for the belt drive was in the rear of the vehicle. The transmission and steering of the tank was based on the Mark V tank, the crew consisted of 4 persons. A total of 200 vehicles were ordered, but only 3 were completed by the end of World War I. Production continued on a limited scale after the end of the war, and only 23 of the ordered quantity were completed in total (some sources put the number as high as 35).

The armour of the vehicle was 6-10 mm, it was armed with one machine gun and equipped with side doors. For its weight (27 tons) it was equipped with an underpowered Ricardo gasoline engine of 150 hp, which allowed it to reach a maximum speed of 3.35 mph. Nickname: The Pig.

Tank Mark IX (IC 15), Bovington Tank Museum, 2004.
