Fighter History:
The prototype of the Dewoltine D.500 01 fighter aircraft, on a wide fixed undercarriage with aerodynamic wheel covers, looked fighter-like. The first flight was made by the famous test pilot Marcel Doret on 18 June 1932. The aircraft did not have very good characteristics, there were no flaps on the wing and so the landing speed was quite high for that time, engine overheating could be counted among the childhood ailments. In 1933, 15 pre-production and 45 production aircraft were ordered. The armament of the Dewoitine D.500 C.1 initially consisted of two Vickers 7.7 mm calibre machine guns, these were later replaced by Darne 32 7.5 mm calibre machine guns. These were installed above the engine, and later production aircraft received two more machine guns in the wings outside the undercarriage legs. The Dewoitine D.500-C1 flew first with the Hispano-Suiza 12Nbrs engine, and later with the Hispano-Suiza 12Xbrs engine.
