The war showed the need for a light weapon, powerful enough to fire a burst. This ideal turned out to be the StG-44 assault rifle. The decision led to the reconstruction of the M1 carbine and its conversion to a fully automatic weapon. Complete M2 carbines were produced, as well as conversion kits to convert M1 carbines to M2 designs. For night fighting, the M3 design was developed, essentially a M2 burst-firing carbine equipped with a T-120 sight, which, together with an electric power source and an infrared searchlight, formed a unit called the Infrared Sniperscope M1. The M1, M2 and M3 carbines remained in service until the late 1960s.
