Sack AS 6

In July 1939, a model airplane race was held in Leipzig-Moskau, where a farmer named Arthur Sack demonstrated his 1.25 m diameter circular wing airplane powered by a 1.1 kW Kratmo F-30B engine. His performance was not very impressive - he could only take off handheld, but then flew well - but the concept caught the eye of Ernst Udet, who recommended Sack to continue. Sack continued development, and in late 1940 his experiments culminated in the Sack AS-6, which was no longer just a model but was to be piloted.
Sack built his machine partly on his farm near Leipzig, later he was helped with the work, mainly theoretically, by the Mitteldeutsche Motorwerke in Leipzig, and practically by mechanics from Brandis Airport, also near Leipzig, where the completed machine arrived at the beginning of 1944. The locals also helped him to add some parts, cannibalized and destroyed aircraft, so Sack equipped his plane with a cabin, seat and landing gear from a destroyed Bf 109E and an engine Argus As 10C-3 from Bf 108. The wing was of course new, plywood covered as well, and had three spars and eighteen ribs. In February 1944 the first, so far only taxiing, tests took place.
During further tests, it became clear that the tail surfaces, which were totally ineffective, had to be redesigned and the landing gear, whose right leg broke during one of the tests, had to be moved, The landing gear was moved by 20 cm, which changed the angle of attack of the engine, but this made it too heavy on the nose, so they added a 70 kg load to the tail and the wheels were given brakes from Ju 88. The next test took place on 16 April 1944 at Brandis, when one of the amateur pilots managed to force the aircraft to at least make a short jump. However, the small wingspan proved unable to compensate for the engine torque. A more powerful engine was needed, but it was not available, so Sack reverted to theory and the AS-6 remained on the airfield.
In the summer of 1944, JG 400, flying Comets, moved to Brandis. Its pilots soon discovered the Sack AS-6 and attempted to take off on it. The result was broken landing gear legs. Further damage was caused by an air attack on the airfield in late 1944/45, when its wreckage was used for arson. The metal parts ended up in a pile of other debris in which they completely disappeared. The Americans who occupied the airfield in April 1945 found no trace of this "flying beer tray".
