The ship Juan Carlos I (L-61), was initially cataloged as an ice of strategic ideas, with the intention of creating a vessel capable of amphibious attack.

Today, the vessel is the largest tonnage the Spanish Navy has ever had.
The Juan Carlos I is a multi-purpose warship that has a runway for ski-jump aircraft that facilitates the takeoff of aircraft, as well as a new propulsion system that allows great autonomy of the vessel.

The ship's design was approved in September 2003 and Navantia Ferrol began construction on May 20, 2005.

The vessel is to perform the following tasks:
• Support the Marines as well as other forces involved in the landing. For this, it has the space and capacity to be able to land a complete Marine brigade.
• Implement the tasks of strategic transport of ground forces.
• Perform tasks as a base for the air force carried.
• Perform humanitarian aid tasks

To perform these tasks, the vessel is equipped with spaces for units and material for both amphibious units and aviation. The garage and hangar are built on two floors with an area of 6,000 m2. and are universal with a load capacity of 6,000 tons each.

The vessel has space for flooding and carrying 4 amphibious landing craft LCM-1E and 4 supercat or one LCAC (landing craft, air cushion).

Deployment of amphibious technology

For vehicle transport the vessel has a garage for heavy vehicles with an area of 1,400 m & # 178 ;, while the area can be increased by up to 975 m & # 178; using a flood dock and thus the ship is capable of transporting 46 heavy vehicles (eg Leopard 2). For light vehicles, there is an area that is a continuation of the hangar, with an area of 2046 m & # 178 ;.

Deployment of heavy equipment in the garage

Deployment of light equipment

There is also a hospital on board with 2 operating theaters, an odontological ward, a UCI, an X-ray machine, a laboratory, a pharmacy and a chapel.

For air operations the vessel is equipped with 2 elevators for the transport of aircraft, the flight deck measures 202 x 32 m with a ski jump with a slope of 12 degrees.

Flight deck

Hangar

The location of aircraft is on the flight deck or hangar in general as follows:
• 12 aircraft in the hangar (including CH-47 "Chinook" with disassembled propeller blades), while if necessary, it is possible to place aircraft in the garage for light vehicles and increase the capacity to 30 aircraft (10 Ch-47 "Chinook" ).
• 6 aircraft on the flight deck (including 4 CH-47 "Chinook" simultaneously operating).

Available proper load during aviation operations

Maximum load of aviation material

Juan Carlos I is the first ship in the Spanish service to use diesel electric propulsion. The basis of the drive is a gas turbine and two diesel generators. The vessel is equipped with two POD 11 MW each with fixed blades of 4.5 m circumference.

The autonomy of the ship is 9,000 square meters. miles, at a speed of 15 knots. The speed of the ship is at
• Amphibious operations - 20 nodes
• Air operations - 21 nodes
• Maximum sustainable speed of 19 knots
