Annotation During the spring of 1942, the German armed forces were able to recover from the setbacks they had suffered during the previous winter in the Eastern European theatre of war. In May 1942, it destroyed Soviet forces in the Kharkov area, and in the following month launched a large-scale offensive operation on the southern flank that brought it to the great bend of the Don River in late July. The German command, however, overestimated its own forces at that point and continued its offensive actions in two divergent directions - east to Stalingrad and south to the Caucasus ridges. By mid-September 1942, the Germans had penetrated as far as the Stalingrad suburbs and north of the city to the Volga River, but in the days and weeks that followed, the German troops allowed themselves to be drawn into the fierce fighting in the city and, moreover, accepted the battle for Stalingrad as a prestigious affair. Within two months Stalingrad had absorbed the best German troops, while both flanks north and south of the city were covered by the German Allies. The Soviet command took advantage of this in preparing a major offensive operation that encircled the German group in Stalingrad in the second half of November 1942. After the Germans failed to break the encirclement in December, the fate of the German troops in Stalingrad was sealed. In early February 1943, the last of the encircled German troops surrendered and the Soviets achieved a decisive victory that significantly influenced the future course of World War II. This book concisely presents one of the greatest battles in world history and highlights its key moments. The text is supplemented by a large number of photographic, pictorial and map appendices.
The publication includes a DVD with the film Lost Information. Stalingrad 1942.
