Vehiculo Blindado Armadillo APC

This armored vehicle is Guatemalan-made and to date, 50 pieces have been produced in various versions (personnel vehicles, vehicles capable of launching missiles, vehicles equipped with a tower with a 30 mm cannon).

In the late 1970s, Guatemala could not acquire armored vehicles from the United States, so it was decided to develop its own armored vehicle capable of transporting personnel, reconnaissance, and was suitable for performing specific tasks in Guatemalan territory.

The development, design as well as the subsequent realization of the production of the vehicle was carried out by the Military Material Service ( Servicio de Material de Guerra (SMG)) in Guatemala.

The first prototype saw the light of day in 6/1981, while its production was used, if possible, parts that were freely commercially available, which also proves that the vehicle is built on the classic platforms of a truck.

The first series of 5 vehicles was produced in 1983. From the 10th vehicle produced, it was decided to install a more powerful diesel engine in the vehicles and various design modifications were made to improve the vehicle (for example, improving fire openings).

Reo-made gearboxes used by conventional trucks are currently being fitted to vehicles.

At the end of 2007, the Guatemalan army used about 30 Armadillo vehicles.

The Armadillo is in many respects, and especially in construction, very similar to the commercially successful LAV-100 light armored vehicles manufactured by the US Cadillac Gage (now Textron Marine & Land Systems).

Armadillo is fully armored. The driver and the commander shall sit in the front of the vehicle, with a view through two windows in the front and one on each side. There is a double hatch on the roof with which they can leave the vehicle.
In the middle of the vehicle there is a space for the team and in the rear left part of the vehicle engine. There is an exhaust on the left side of the vehicle.

On each side between the axles there is a double-leaf door for leaving the vehicle, the upper part of the door tilting to the side and the lower one downwards and forming a step. Similar doors are located on the rear right side.

Each of the doors has a window and a firing post below it, with two on the sides of the vehicle on the left and three on the right.

On the ceiling of the vehicle is a .50 inch (12.7 mm) machine gun M2HB . The vehicle crew operates it after tilting the ceiling to two sides, right and left.

Some vehicles also have a manually operated 7.62 mm machine gun, depending on the version, there are also vehicles equipped with unguided missiles (equipped with 1, 2 or 6 missiles).
