PRC-1099/PRC-1099A


There are two types of radios.


The older (almost 25 years old today) model PRC-1099 was the basic model. The basic positive feature was the modular concept of the internal layout, which allowed for easier repairs. An indisputable advantage for use in the civil sector was the 12V power supply of the station. Problems with TX/RX switching, audio signal quality, malfunctioning AGC loop, intermodulation problems, synthesizer problems, charging faults and, above all, the need for some expanding operating features and functions have given rise to the innovated PRC-1099A version.


The upgraded version of the PRC-1099A has undergone a change in the circuit solution, resolving problems with poor audio signal quality, added the ALE function, the radio is equipped with more memory, etc.


The appearance and arrangement of both versions of the radio stations strikes the form of the PRC-25 and PRC-77. This is not just a form, because PRC-25/PRC-77 accessories such as handsets, headsets, antennas, battery boxes and other accessories are the same and applicable to both versions of PRC-1099/A, because they comply with the US standard for system connector connections.


Although the radio station "became famous" in the military and in the civilian sector with rather poor features (in the military sector and its price exceeding $ 6,000 for the basic version), the radio station also had its positive sides. The modernized version had 100 programmable memories, in the car installation it allowed up to 1kW of power with the appropriate amplifier, the transceiver has a well-functioning built-in automatic tuner, allows ALE operation according to the FED-STD-1045 ALE standard, etc.

Yes, the PRC-1099A version is better in many parameters due to the changed circuit topology.


Problems with audio signal quality have been removed, standardization of connections with US military connectors (pin and type connections), significant improvement of intermodulation resistance, problems with TX/RX switching have been removed. Compared to the original version, the 1099A also has better quality cabinet seals.


Datron is reportedly still able to service this version. However, the price of these stations on the market is still around $ 2k per used piece and spare parts/modules are very difficult to find.


Still, some 1099As have problems with charging, and some pieces have experienced access to some memory locations in banks.

The manufacturer of the PRC1099A is Datron Worl Communications. The manufacturer of the original version was not much, according to one tarnsceiver I had as a sample in my hands, they presented themselves as a top supplier, but it was a typical American advertisement. The device shown had only average features and little resistance to environmental influences I hope the PRC1099A is better.
