Between 1932 and 1935, the Fort Eben-Emael artillery fortress was built on the rocky bank of the Albert Canal, on a rocky hill twenty kilometers north of Liege, Belgium, six kilometers south of Maastricht in the Netherlands, and 35 kilometers west of Aachen, Germany.
