Modest hero Colonel Josef Ščerba
Colonel Josef Ščerba was a telegraphist for a Czechoslovak RAF bomber squadron in Great Britain during the war, and after his plane was shot down he almost died in the North Sea and then suffered German captivity. After returning from England, he served briefly in the Czechoslovak army before the Communists expelled him from the army after February 1948.
