The construction of the fortress on the island of Mullet Key sa began in 1898. Pevnosť bola súčasťou defense of the gulf of Tampa Bay. Pomenovaná bola 04.04.1900 honor of the španielskeho prieskumníka Hernando De Soto (1495 – 1542).
Pevnosť consisting of dvomi betónovými batériami. Batéria Laidley, completed in 1900, was armed with 8 x 12" mínomet (mažiar), batéria Bigelow, dokonená 1904,bola armed dvojicou 3" kanónov.
Pevnosť bola military crew obsadená in rokoch 1900-1922. In the year 1917 boli of Batteries Laidley moved 4 mímomety to batérii Whistler, Fort Rosecrans.
To 25.05.1923 bola pevnosť opustená and maintenance was left to one man. In the 1928 bol island ponúknutý on me, but without záujmu. To 29.09.1938 bola pevnosť with the property market crashed odkúpená okresom Pinellas for 12500 dolárov. In súvislosti with the outbreak of the 2. svetovej war odkúpila government pozekmky so buildings späť to 22.03.1941 for 18404 dolárov. Objects boli priradené to MacDill Field and slúžili ako Strelecké and bombardovacie training center (Army Air Force gunnery and bombing training center).
In 1948 boal pevnosť definitívme repealed and opäť odpredaná the county of Pinellas including another pozemkov in the area. In 1963, bol on pozemkoch created park. Súčasťou park su aj preserved buildings of the fort, including 12" mínometu M1890M1 Mortars he M1896M1 Carriage and a pair of 6" british ' twas Armstrong pochádzajúcich of batteries Burchsted, Fort Dade.
