Brigadier John Alan Lyde Caunter was born on 17.12.1889 at Banwell, Somerset as a son of GP Richard Lawrence Caunter and Johanna Wilhelmina Koerber.
His first education received at Uppingham School and subsequently at Royal Military College, Sandhurst. After graduation he received his first commission as a Second Lieutenant to Gloucestershire Regiment (Hart Centre Archives).
