Brigadier Sir Norman Wilmshurst Gwatkin was born on 2nd August 1899 at Parsktone (today area of Pool) as a son of Hugh Fortescue Wilmshurst Gwatkin and Vera Philpots (The Peerage).
He was educated at Clifton College and after at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. After graduation he received his first commission as a Second Lieutenant of Coldstream Guards (The Gazette, 31140). He served with his unit till 1936 when he became be Staff Officer of the Royal Household. Here he served as a Assistant Comptroller of the Lord Chamberlain (WW2Talk, 2019).
In 1940 he became a Lieutenant Colonel and from 14.10.1940 the Commanding Officer (CO) of the 4th Battalion Coldstream Guards, which he commanded until July 1943 when he is assigned as a Deputy Commanding Officer of 5th Guards Armoured Brigade and since December he became be its Commanding Officer(Generals).
The brigade disembarks in Normandy and in the following time participates in the liberation of Northwestern Europe. For his performance at the CO of the brigade during the advance from Le Tourneur towards Vassy on 02.08.1944 (following day WIA) he is awarded with DSO (WW2Talk, 2019).
After the end of the war, he returns to the royal household, in the years 1950-1952 as an Extra Equerry of the HRM the King George VI and in years 1952-1972 HRM the Queen Elizabeth II (The Peerage) and also again to service to Lord Chamberlain (The Gazette, 39616). In 1960-1964 he was comptroller of the Lord Chamberlain's Office and in years 1963-1971 Secretary and Registrar of the Order of Merit.
