PZL.50 Jastrząb

History:
At the turn of 1936/1937, the development of a modern fighter began, which was to replace the high-altitude PZL P.11. , the project of engineer Wsiewołod Jan Jakimiuk - PZL P.50 was selected. However, work on the new aircraft did not have the necessary priority and so the development of the aircraft took a long time. In the meantime, the designer worked on the project of the PZL P.44 Wicher transport aircraft. Another delay was caused by the delivery of a retractable chassis from the British company Dowty.

The construction of the new machine was all-metal, duralumin panels were used quite extensively. The propulsion unit was first a British nine-cylinder Bristol Mercury VIII, but later, during the tests, the Polish-licensed PZL-Mercury with a three-bladed adjustable Hamilton-Standard propeller was preferred. The new fighter was completed in October 1938, but the first takeoff was made in February of the following year. The results of the first flight tests brought considerable disappointment, the aircraft reached a maximum speed in the range of 420 to 430 km/h. Such values were achieved by PZL P.24 fighters, but these fighters maneuvered the new Jastrząb in all flight modes. During a training duel with a PZL.37 Łoś bomber, test pilot Jastrząba was unable to take a firing position.

The Jastrząba prototype had to return to the factory to make the necessary adjustments. Unfortunately, some poor properties were due to the design and the aircraft had a large weight due to this. For example, the wing girders were too massive and thus heavy, the chosen wing profile put considerable air resistance and another disadvantage was the small engine power, which was further reduced by an unsuitable and insufficient diameter of the intake opening. After replacing the British engine with a Polish license with a new propeller, the maximum speed of 500 km/h was reportedly reached, but the tests were interrupted by the war. The aircraft was lost on September 6, 1939, when it, along with other prototypes, flew further east to Lviv, pilot Jan Widawski mesel with a machine to make an emergency landing in the woods for lack of fuel, emergency landing near Rawa Russia turned out badly, the aircraft was destroyed. Some sources state that the destruction of the prototype was due to the Polish anti-aircraft artillery.

The second prototype PZL P.50/II was to be powered by a more powerful French engine Gnome-Rhône 14Kfrs with an output of 900 horsepower, it was to be a model piece for the PZL P-50B series. This prototype was not completed. For further development, it was planned to use a powerful British engine Bristol Taurus III or IV.

A large order for 300 PZL P.50A aircraft was cut into 30 pieces, production of this series was being prepared. Several aircraft under construction fell into the hands of the Germans, one of which was apparently completed and flown (pilot Kazimir Kul), further development or production was stopped.

Diskuse

The prototype PZL P50 Jastrzab had, unfortunately, more than a sad fate! In the first days of the war, Polish pilots flew it and prepared at least this one machine for combat deployment. Unfortunately, he was shot down by uninformed anti-aircraft artillery, who considered this aircraft unknown to them as a German machine in Poland, hitherto unknown construction!
