Ike jacket

Diskuse

Hi, hello
I have a question about the Ike jacket. What do the 2 stripes on the left sleeve mean ? According to the stripes on the shoulder it's a lieutenant, but the 2 at the bottom are unknown to me. The jacket is dated 1944.
Hopefully someone has a clue what it is.

Thanks

These are direct "Overseas Service Bars", which reflect the length of service overseas. Each one bar represents 6 completed months of overseas service, so this lieutenant has served "somewhere between" one and one and a half years outside the United States. These tapes were usually gold/yellow.

Also used were the angled Service Stripes (worn only by enlisted men, not by enlisted men or officers), which represented the total length of military service(not including misdemeanors). Each single stripe represented 3 completed years of service in the armed forces. These strips came in many colors including yellow, red, blue, ...

Since a lieutenant does not have the markings of the bias tapes designating his length of military service, the tapes designating his length of service overseas are (have) 4 inches above the cuff/end of the left sleeve[/b:aaaa].

If he were not an officer, but a member of the enlisted force, he would (have) 4 inches above the cuff/sleeve end in front of the bands indicating his length of military service (slanted) and above them (straight) the bands indicating his length of service overseas...
The bands, or the period of service expressed by them, do not "add up", the interpretation in such a case would be "total service, of which he served abroad..."

One more thing: In order to make the sewing of "Service Stripes" and "Service Bars" less complicated for the wearer, the strips were supplied in yardage and when changing the "value" it was enough to cut the strip with the appropriate number of strips and sew it over...
