RF-4E Phantom II was created as an export version of the type RF-4C. The basic design of both aircraft is practically identical, both machines differ in only a few points. The fuselage, like the rudders, was completely taken from RF-4C, the slots on the wings come from F-4E. The RF-4E also received a boundary layer blowing system built into the wing, which improves flight characteristics at low speeds. Several changes have also shown photographic equipment and air conditioning. The RF-4E, like its predecessor, the RF-4C, is equipped with six internal fuselage fuel tanks. The most fundamental change was the replacement of the J79-GE-15A engines common to the C variant with the J79-GE-17A from the F-4E version.

The heart of the RF-4E's avionics is the Texas Instruments AN/APQ 99 radar. Compared to its competitors at the time, it excelled in higher resolution and greater range. The radar crews used mainly to control the ground flight and to map the terrain. The altitude of the aircraft above the ground is measured by a radio altimeter AN/APN 159. Other important avionics devices include the inertial navigation system AN/ASN 63 with a built-in navigation computer.

Optical sensors are installed in four places in the bow. In the first position is the KS-87B aerial camera, which shoots obliquely forward and can be rotated to a vertical position during the flight ( this position is used for night events). The camera uses lenses with focal lengths of 3 and 6 inches. The KA-56E panoramic camera is also located in the bow of the Phantom. In the next position, a pair of KS-87B cameras tilted against each other for shooting from medium and large heights is installed. These cameras use lenses with a focal length of 3 and 6 inches. Lenses with focal lengths of 12 and 18 inches are also available, but only one of the two cameras can be mounted using them.

In order for reconnaissance missions to take place at night, the Phantoms are equipped with flares, the projectiles of which are located to the right and left of the keel. Flares can produce light the size of about 2 million candelas and allow you to take quality photos from a flight height of 1000 m. Another reconnaissance system is an infrared sensor AN/AAS 18A located in the bow of the aircraft, which captures the thermal radiation of target objects. The obtained film then captures the temperature differences of individual targets in light or dark shades, thanks to which the activity of enemy ground technology can be recognized.

The export version of the RF-4E Phantom II surpassed the original RF-4C of the US Air Force in many respects. Systems and structural subassemblies from the German RF-4E therefore decided to take over the US Air Force and use them from production unit 41 in its reconnaissance Phantoms version C.

This German Phantom II (35+62, serial number 69-7499, serial number 4144) can't boast a great flying career. In the AG 52 reconnaissance squadron stationed in Leck it flew around 50 flight hours between 1971 and 1972. His last flight was in April 1972, when he moved to the Luftwaffe Technical School in Kaufbeuren, where he served for the next 30 years to train aircraft mechanics. In October 2003, the machine was towed to the Aerospace Museum in Berlin-Gatow, where it is still on display these days. (©Radek Havelka)
