Mi-35M ( Mi-35M) is an export serial version of the helicopter Mi-24VM ( Ми-24ВМ). Changes were gradually introduced into the production in three resp. four stages. The first phase, designated Mi-35M1, complied with the Mi-24VM standard ( Mi-35M1). In addition, the helicopter was equipped with TV3-117VMA engines ( ТВ3-117ВМА), which achieve higher performance especially at higher temperatures and lower atmospheric pressure. The KAU-110 booster ( KAU-110) was replaced by a new KAU-115 ( KAU-115) in the control system, which also improved helicopter maneuverability. The main gearbox was equipped with an additional oil cooler.

Changes also occurred in the armament - Mi-35M1 can use APU-8/4-U adapters ( АПУ-8/4-У), originally designed for the helicopter Mi-28, which allow you to hang up to 8 pieces of PTRS on one hanger 9M114 ( 9М114) kompletu "Šturm-V" (" Штурм-В "), but also more modern missiles of the set" Ataka-V "(" Атака-В ") - mainly PTRS 9M120 ( 9М120) with cumulative head, or its improved variant 9M220 ( 9М220), or missiles 9M120F ( 9М120Ф) with a combined warhead (fragmentation explosive and cumulative effect). The 9M220O missile ( 9M220O) with a fragmentation effect is used to fight air targets. With all usable missiles, the Mi-35M1 is able to fire at a distance of up to 6 km, using a semi-active radio command guidance system. The probability of destroying the target reaches up to 0.95, while the missiles of the Ataka set are 1.7-2.2 times more effective than older missiles 9M114.

The use of adapters allowed the designers to redesign the helicopter wing ends (where the older types of PTRS pylons are located in older types) and at the same time reduce the weight of the kite, which also contributed to the overall shortening of the wings. New BDZ-UV arm hangers ( БДЗ-УВ) are used on the wings, with the possibility of transporting payloads (eg additional fuel tanks, etc.).

Mi-35M1 uses the new photo-machine SŠ-45 ( СШ-45) instead of S-13 ( С-13 ), which allows you to track the position of the target in the eyepiece of the sight. Also new is the BTŠ-24 on-board simulator ( БТШ-24), which allows the operator to practice not only aiming and firing missiles, but also simulates possible interference from the enemy. At the customer's request, the helicopters can also be equipped with other instrumentation, including a satellite navigation system. For work with reduced visibility (at night), the crew is equipped with night vision devices ONV-2 ( ОНВ-2).

After the experience of local conflicts (mainly from Afghanistan) and in connection with the standard of retrofitting helicopters Mi-24 in the Russian Army (but also in other CIS countries) the helicopter is equipped with a large number of passive systems of IR interference - the exchangers are located on both sides of the fuselage and tail of the helicopter, each exchanger contains 3 ASO-2V cartridges ( ASO- 2В) and the cassette contains 32 flares. Active IR interference is provided by the L-166V-11E ( Л-166В-11Е). Irradiation by enemy radars is detected by the SPO-15 s (L-006) "Birch" warning system ( СПО-15 s (Л-006) "Birch"). To reduce IR radiation, the helicopter can be equipped with an EVU exhaust gas cooling system (УВУ).

The safety of the helicopter is also increased by a system which, in the event of tanks being blown up, secures them sealed with polyurethane foam.To prevent excessive hydraulic fluid from escaping from the helicopter control systems, these systems are equipped with a larger number of safety valves, there are also changes in the cockpit, the individual control elements are further apart to prevent their simultaneous damage in a single operation.

New fiberglass rotor blades were also used to reduce the weight of the helicopter, and some elements used on the Mi-28 helicopter were used in the control system. The saving of 85-90 kg can also be brought by the installation of a fixed chassis instead of a retractable one (at the customer's request).

Behind the designation Mi-35M2 is a slightly improved version of the Mi-35M1 helicopter. The helicopter can use 9M39 air-to-air missiles. The PLRK Igla-V (Игла-В) - an airborne version of the 9K38 Igla portable ground-based anti-aircraft missile suite. Another change to the armament is the replacement of the GS-23L (ГШ-23Л) gun with the GS-23V (ГШ-23В) gun, which, thanks to water cooling, allows it to fire in longer bursts and more frequently. Also included in the equipment is a new means of liaison to ensure communication with supported ground units or airborne homing craft.

The third stage of the Mi-35M (Ми-35М) helicopter upgrade is designated Mi-35M3 (Ми-35М3). This type has also been introduced into the armament of the Ground Forces of the Russian Federation. The helicopter is equipped with the PNK-24 (ПНК-24) pilot-navigation system, derived from the analogous PrPNK-28 (ПрПНК-28) system used in Mi-28 (Ми-28) helicopters. Also new is the Tor-24 (Tor-24) fire control system, which replaced the original "Raduga" ("Радугa") system and is also based on the technical solutions used in the Mi-28 ([iaa]Ми-28) helicopter. Another change is the removal of the L-166V-11E active IC jamming station (L-166V-11E), which, based on experience with modern PLRKs, appears to be not only ineffective, but rather allows the missile warhead to better intercept and track the helicopter. As a replacement, the helicopter received the Mak-UFM (Мак-УФМ) system, operating in the IR band of the spectrum (the system was initially tested on Su-24M (Су-24М) and Su-39 (Су-39)) and the Pastel radar system (Пастель). These systems work in conjunction with the UV-26 (УВ-26) automatic deception target launcher, which allows deception targets to be fired only when necessary.

The equipment of Mi-35M helicopters is not strictly prescribed and the design of the helicopter allows for some variability, especially in navigation and communications equipment, but also in fire control systems. This was demonstrated by the first Mi-35M demonstrator presented at the Moscow International Exhibition in August 1995 (MAKS-95) (attached image, courtesy of www.paulnann.com ). Despite being a sub-variant of the Mi-35M2, the helicopter was equipped with systems not standard on this sub-variant. These were mainly the use of the French NADIR-10 navigation system, the NOCAS (Night Operation Capable Avionics System) fire control system, the Chlio night vision system, the VH-100 HUD and SMD-45H multifunction displays.

Mil Mi-35M4 / AH-2 Sabre

In mid-October 2009, Brazilian Air Force pilots began the practical part of their training as part of their retraining for the newly delivered Mi-35M helicopters. The first Mi-35M helicopter manufactured for Brazil, which received the camouflage and markings of the Brazilian Air Force on 08.10.2009, is being used for practical training in Russia.

Brazil ordered 12 Mi-35M helicopters in November 2008, during the visit of Russian President Medvedev to Brazil.
The helicopter used for training (and the first of a new series destined for Brazil) took off on 15.08.2009 and also completed its first night flight on 27.08.2009. During these days, a delegation of the Brazilian Air Force, led by its commander Juniti Saito, was also present at the Rostvertol production facility.

The helicopter is introduced within the Brazilian Air Force under the designation AH-2 Sabre, the delivery was completed in November 2014, when the last 3 units were delivered.

The Brazilian Air Force began using the first helicopters in April 2010. They are destined for the Amazon region and their home base is the Porto Velho Air Base (BA Porto Velho). Compared to the original Mil Mi-35Ms, the Brazilian Sabres have Israeli avionics.
