Ruský ministr obrany Anatolyj Serdykov prohlásil, že Rusko už neplánuje další základny v cizině. Doposud má čtyři, leteckou základnu v Kantu, Kyrgystánu, černomořskou flotilu v Sevastopolu, a nově budované základny v Jižní Osetii a Abcházii.
