V 6/1943 gen.plk. Heinz Guderian introduced specifications for the new multi-purpose tank. It was a standardized platform that was to prevent the fragmentation of war production between countless types of German armored vehicles. A reconnaissance tank, an artillery observation tank, an anti-aircraft tank, a light self-propelled gun and a tank destroyer were to be created on the platform. A vehicle of mass category 28 tons was to be created. The plan envisaged the cessation of tank production Pz.Kpfw. IV, only this universal platform and tanks should be produced Panther a Tiger.
WaPrüf 6 commissioned Krupp to prepare the design documentation. The project received the designation VK 28.01. Krupp designed a vehicle with large wheels (diameter 700 mm), wide tracks (600 mm), weighing 26 tons and a maximum speed of 30 km/h. The tank was to use a tower from the tank Pz.Kpfw. IV with cannon K.w.K. 40 L/43, later L/48. The hull was to have a modern shape, where the armor plates were welded at sharp angles. The project was presented by the company on July 20, 1943. The machine was to use the engine, transmission and steering from the project "Leopard". The tank tower was to have a low command tower with periscopes (the same should be taken over by tanks Pz.Kpfw.IV). Plans from 7/1943 counted on the completion of development in 3 months, in 6 months a prototype was to be built, which was to be subsequently tested for another 3 months. The development and modification of the project was to be completed for another 8 months, and finally serial production was to begin in 4/1945. At the end of 10/1943, however, the project was canceled.
