Brief history:
The development of this version started already in may 1944, Rikugun Koku Hombu from this adjustment it was promised that it will acquire an effective weapon against the american Boeingům B-29. Editing was entrusted to the 1. aero-technology laboratory in Tačikavě. It was an adjustment and means that the aircraft Ki-46-IIIb (Otsu) were not newly made, but adapted from already made exploratory Ki-46-III. Modification consisted of the installation of two dvacetimilimetrových cannons Him-5, which was probably the best cannon of the japanese army air force. Installation of weapons forced a change in the glazing of the cabin, due to altered cabin resembled stupňovitému overlapping older Ki-46-II, but for fighter aircraft was easier framing of the lens. Cannons were mutually offset, thereby to ensure a sufficient space for the feeder, the bullets were stored in strips.
The total was into this form of regulated about 75 aircraft and 50 of such modified machines, it was in September yet retrofitted pylons for the two hundred-pound aerial bombs That Dan. The cougars have used with some successes against the bombers B-29.

Fighter aircraft were assigned to the armament units of the air defense of the parent of the Japanese islands (Dokuritsu 17. Chutai, Dokuritsu 16. Chutai, Dukuritsu 101. Chutai and 28. Sentai). The american B-29 were fighter aeroplanes Dinah attacked also in Manchuria, where it operated Dokuritsu 81.Chutai, sergeant Akiyama received for the destruction of the bomber B-29 Sn. 42-24505 order Bukosho class Otsu. The attack launched by The Dan, then attacked a bomber from behind cannon fire and the attack ended successfully crash into the tail of a bomber. Akiyama survived the attack with only minor injuries.

What qualities should a fighter Ki-46-III Otsu? He was fast enough, but didn't have the necessary rate of climb to operating altitude of 8 000 feet soared a full twenty minutes, service ceiling just slightly in excess of 10 000 m was also fully sufficient and even armament of two cannons caliber twenty millimeters wasn't against the B-29 too effective. A solution would be to use high octane fuel (95 octane), the slightly improved rate of climb and service ceiling rose by 2 000 metres. One prototype was operationally tested with in the bow of stored cannon Ho-204 caliber 37 mm. Hit this grenade already mostly led to the destruction of the čtyřmotorového bomber.

Attempts by armed reconnaissance aircraft Dinah can be traced back in 1942, when it was experimentally dozbrojeno seventeen Ki-46-II protinkovým cannon caliber 37 mm. The machines were transported to the naval base of Rabaul, where it is taken to your arsenal 10. Sentai. This aircraft was defending Rabaul before the bombers B-17. It was not a happy solution, the plane was heavy on the head and cadence manually nabijeného cannon was very low - 3 rounds a minute..
