In 1612, the Hungarian nobleman Mikulas Esterházy married the estate of Landsee-Lackenbach. In 1620 a battle took place on this territory, which was part of the Thirty Years' War.
After the outbreak of the rebellion, Esterházy remained loyal to the Emperor. An army of Bethlen's Hungarian rebels surrounded his troops, whose defensive centre was the water castle at Lackenbach. The encircled soldiers were counting on the arrival of help to free them from their tight grip. Through skilful tactics, they managed to delay surrender. Then, at the last moment, the imperial general Dampierre arrived with seven hundred cavalrymen, four hundred Cossacks, three hundred musketeers and a group of Neckenmarkt peasants. While this did not equal the strength of the rebel army, Dampierre managed to attack skillfully. The result was the loosening of the besiegers' grip and the death of rebel commander Matthias Tarrody, along with more than a thousand of his fellow soldiers.
In addition, the Imperialists managed to capture fourteen battalions. Mikulas Esterhazy the emperor's favour, which materialized in his promotion to the status of count and his appointment as palatine of Hungary in 1625.
