After the failure of the armoured car design LP-1, design work continued and in 1937 a new development form LP-2 was created. At the Maribyrnong Ordnance Factory, Melbourne, Victoria, two prototypes differed in the components used. One prototype was built using Ford components, the car was powered by a modified Ford V8 engine. The vehicle was nicknamed "Billabong". The second prototype was built using Chevrolet components. The vehicle was nicknamed "Boomerang". Both vehicles were armed with a Lewis .303 cal machine gun, which was armed in a revolving turret on the roof of the vehicle. Both prototypes were part of the armament of the 1st Armoured Car Regiment stationed at Horsham, Victoria, in which it served until its retirement in 1942.
