Gen. José Santos Guardiola Bustillo

*1.11.1816 Tegucigalpa, Honduras
+11.1.1861 Comayagua, Honduras

President of Honduras /17.2.1856-11.1.1862/

General Santos Guardiola graduated from the military school of arms in Honduras under Colombian Colonel Narciso Benítez.

Subsequently, as a member of the army, he participated in the battles of Espíritu Santo and San Pedro Perulupán.

On February 17, 1856, he is appointed President of Honduras and holds the office until his assassination on January 11, 1862.

During his reign, he was instrumental in bringing the islands of Wyke-Cruz and La Mosquitia back to Honduras by the Wyke-Cruz Agreement, while guaranteeing the islanders freedom of religion and worship. Santos Guardiola subsequently annexed these territories to Honduras peacefully.

Gen. Guardiola put into effect freedom of the press, and to defend himself against attacks by the opposition in the press, he founded his own newspaper, "El Vigilante".

In 1856, he makes an agreement with Guatemala and El Salvador, sending troops together to aid Nicaragua which is fighting William Walker's filibusters. He subsequently fights battles against William Walker, defeating him at El Obraje, and then returns to Honduras.

During his reign, William Walker returns once more through the port of Trujillo, with President Gen. José Santos Guardiola dispatches Gen. Mariano Alvarez to fight him. The latter pursues him and finally captures Rio Tinto, where he is tried and executed in Trujillo on 12 September 1860.

José Santos Guardiola was assassinated by members of his personal guard on 11.1.1862 in Comayagua in his own home. The murderer was the commander of the garrison in Comayagua, Pablo Agurcia.

This is the only time in Honduran history that a head of state has been assassinated while in office.
