BA-30

Half-track armored car

In 1937, NATI tried to improve the off-road performance of existing BA series armored vehicles. A half-track chassis derived from a serial chassis was chosen. The experimental vehicle was named BA-30, the body of the vehicle was derived from the BA-20, but was not exactly the same, the tower was from older versions of the BA-20 armed with a DT 7.62mm machine gun. The NATI built a belt section with a large drive and tensioning wheel, four small castors and one support pulley, this is the same configuration used in the GAZ 60 truck included in the Red Army. The belts were steel with rubber lining (according to the pictures, however, it seems that rubber lining was not the rule).

Thanks to its low weight, the car had good off-road performance. The steering was with the help of the front wheels, which, as with the BA-20, could be exchanged for skis if necessary. For further tests, a small series of BA-30 was produced in 1937. The concept of the vehicle was accepted, but there was no series production. It was allegedly a defect that the heavy BA-6 machines showed similar off-road properties when the belts were fitted to the rear wheels, but with a higher firing capacity and a lower price. These machines were also better armored and much faster on the road (after removing the belts). Despite the fact that serial production was rejected, the concept was found valuable and further monitored, for this reason, several BA-30 prototype series were sent for testing in the fighting of the Winter War with Finland. Unfortunately, the results of the deployment are not known.
