Gen. José Gerardo Barrios Espinoza

*1813 Cacahuatique, El Salvador
+29.8.1865 San Salvador, El Salvador

President of El Salvador /12.3.1859-1.2.1863/

Barrios was a member of the Liberal Party and was a strong supporter of the Central American Federation. From the age of 15 he served in the federal army, under the command of Gen. Morazán.

In 1828, he entered the army of Gen. Morazán, although he was still an adolescent, he fought in the Battle of Gualcho on July 6, 1828, against troops led by Col. Vicente Domínguez.

In 1856, he led Salvadoran troops that went to Nicaragua to fight William Walker's invasion of the filibusters.

After assuming the presidency in 1859, he began the creation of teacher training schools (escuelas normales) for elementary schools. His government is credited with starting the planting and cultivation of coffee in the territory of El Salvador.

Gen. Gerardo Barrios gave the use of the land to peasants who decided to grow coffee in these fields.

In 1863, war broke out between the liberal government of Salvador Barrios and Guatemala, ruled by the conservative dictator Carrera. Barrios was defeated in this war and went into exile in Panama.

After these events, with the support of the conservative government of Guatemala, a conservative regime was established in El Salvador and Francisco Duenas was installed as president. Gerardo Barrios returns from exile and attempts to overthrow the conservative government, but before doing so he is captured and shot in San Salvador on August 29, 1865.

In 1910 he was included in the category of national heroes of El Salvador. His remains rest in San Salvador in the Cemetery of the Famous.
