After the failure of the TR-4 series of tractor and transporter designs (TR-4, TR-4-1, TR-4-2 and TR-4-3), a universal transporter, designated TR-26, was developed in 1935 on the chassis of the T-26-1935 tank, in parallel with the TC-26 tank tank.
A body made of 10 mm sheet metal (higher than that of the TR-4) with rounded front and rear edges was welded onto the hull of the T-26-1935. The side doors, opening forward, took up more than a third of the length of the body on both sides, and two rectangular hatches, also opening forward, were placed on the roof. The superstructure extended over the body to above the fenders. The complete hull, including the engine and gearbox, remained the same, except that a square protrusion with a DT 7.62 mm machine gun appeared to the left of the driver's seat in front of the commander's seat. The infantry transporter still had a front viewport in the superstructure, side doors opening to both sides and two opening windows in the rear and a trapdoor for a second DT machine gun.
In January 1936, a second one was installed in plant No. 185 Im. Kirov, two prototypes weighing 8,600 - 8,800 kg were produced in 185 in January - one for transporting infantry (10 men) and one for transporting ammunition (390 rounds of 45 mm calibre ammunition in chests).
In the same year 210 transports of both types were to be produced, unfortunately the prototypes suffered from the shortcomings of the T-26 tanks and vehicles on their chassis - low power and poor engine cooling and production was cancelled.
