Entpannungspanzer Pz-65

(Entp Pz-65)

Development

The development of the Entp Pz-65 salvage tank was started by the Swiss company Eidgenössische Konstruktions-Werkstätte (EKW) in 1961. The first prototype was produced by the company in 1967-1968. This prototype was based on the underbody of the Pz-61 tank. However, mass-produced vehicles were already mounted on the modernized Pz-68 tank underbody. Series production began in 1970. The Entp 65 entered service in 1972 and became the Swiss Army's primary technical and recovery vehicle. Each tank battalion had three of these recovery vehicles incorporated into its line-up, while artillery batteries were equipped with one Entp-65 vehicle each. After a modernisation carried out in the late 1970s, the tank was renamed Entp 65/88 type. It was also used by units equipped with German Leopard 2 tanks (Swiss designation Pz-87), which gradually replaced the Pz-68 type tanks. Production of the Entp 65/68 was discontinued in the 1980s.

Armament

It was designed to perform technical support, recovery and removal of damaged equipment in field conditions in the Swiss Army's armored units armed with Pz-61 tanks, Pz-68 and Pz-87 (Leopard 2), to clear obstacles from roads, maintain roads and dig trenches for combat vehicles.

Description

The Entp Pz-65 recovery tank is based on the machine underbelly of the Pz-68. As part of the conversion to a salvage tank, the turret assembly was removed. Modifications to the side sections and the hull ceiling created a large transport space for a crew of five. The transport compartment and hull are welded from steel plates and provide the crew with protection from infantry weapons up to 7.62 mm calibre and shrapnel from hand grenades. The compartment is accessible from the left side by a door and three ceiling hatches. The driver's seat is on the right side of the compartment. Its hatch is equipped with three periscopes and tilts rearwards. Just behind the driver is the commander's station. The conning tower is equipped with periscopes around its perimeter. Between the two hatches are four Swedish-made Le GW74 type smoke grenade launchers of 80,5 mm calibre. In the left part of the transport compartment ceiling there is a third hatch equipped with periscopes around its perimeter for the remaining three crew members. In front of it is a machine gun Pz Mg 51/71 of 7.5 mm calibre, designed to protect the vehicle from enemy live fire and low-flying aircraft. The firepower carried is 3,200 rounds of 7.5 mm calibre ammunition and 20 smoke grenades of 80.5 mm calibre. At the rear of the hull is the engine compartment, the ceiling of which also forms a large platform that can be used to transport spare parts, equipment and, in an emergency, to remove wounded from the battlefield. Boxes for tool kits, extrication preparations and other equipment are located on both sides of the upper hull along its entire length.

The tank's chassis consists of six running wheels on both sides of the hull, with the drive wheel at the rear and the tension wheel at the front. The suspension of the running wheel arms is suspended by a system using a set of pre-tensioned circular washers (Belleville Tellerfeder). The upper branch of the belt is supported by three pulleys. The width of the track belt is 520 mm and the length of the contact area between the belt and the ground is 4 430 mm. The belts can be fitted with rubber feet to prevent wear on the road. The running gear is not equipped with side guards.

The tank is powered by an 8-cylinder MTU MB 837 Ba-500 diesel engine with an output of 485 kW at 2,200 rpm. Torque transfer from the engine to the chassis is provided by a semi-automatic SLM transmission with 6 forward and 2 reverse gears. The tank's electrical system operates at 24 V and is powered by four 6 V batteries of 200 Ah each.

The tank is equipped with a pressure filter and anti-WMD filter as standard equipment. The tank is not equipped with a fire suppression system and is not adapted for underwater travel. It can overcome a water obstacle by wading to a depth of 1.1 m without preparation.

Special equipment

A hydraulically operated plow is mounted in the front part of the hull to anchor the vehicle when working with a winch or frame hoist. It can also be used for light field work and trenching for equipment. Its width is 3000 mm, height 1000 mm and working capacity 120 m3/h. The maximum headroom is from 0.49 to 0.90 m.

The tank is equipped with a frame hoist which is extended above the front of the vehicle in the working position, which it uses as a base. The lower ends of the frame jack are attached to pins on either side of the front of the hull just above the plough. The upper part of the jack frame is suspended by a rope from a set of pulleys just behind the crew compartment. In the transport position, the hoist frame is supported on the ceiling of the transport compartment. The lifting capacity of the frame hoist is 15 t and the unloading length is 3,5 m. It is designed to replace groups and subgroups of damaged vehicles in the field.

The main winch is located at the front of the hull under the front armour of the transport compartment. It is designed to extricate damaged equipment, clear obstacles from roads and, if necessary, to self-extricate. Its pulling force is 25 tons, up to 75 tons using a pulley system, the length of the rope is 120 m.

The auxiliary winch serves as a supplement to the main winch, or to release light automotive equipment. Its pulling force is 500 kg and the length of the rope is 250 m.

The auxiliary power unit consists of a 4-cylinder MTU UNIMOG type engine, with a volume of 1 767 cm3 and an output of 28 kW. It is designed to power the special equipment of the tank during the shutdown of the main power unit or in case of its failure.

The recovery tank is further equipped with:
- a set of tow bars,
- a set of tow ropes,
- a set of technical jigs and tools,
- a set of engineer tools
