Letov Š-4 was built as a single-seat biplane fighter at the same time with jednoplošným fighter aircraft Letov Š-3. The fuselage of this aircraft was equipped with a metal lattice ground and the ground of the tail surfaces while dvouplošné wing with a fairly thick profile and a small thickness was wooden construction. As the drive unit was chosen proven radial engine Hispano-Suiza 8Ba (hence the initial designation of the Letov Š-HS-4). Aircraft armament consisted of a pair of fixed synchronized machine guns Vickers caliber 7.65 mm. The aircraft was built and fly in 1922 and shortly thereafter was subjected to military trials the representatives of the MNO. After the end of the tests recommended airplane to admission to the air force of Czechoslovakia. After the introduction of serial aircraft in the armament of the czechoslovak air force planes were criticized for the frequent overheating of the engine and a strong labilnost management. Therefore, they were soon withdrawn gradually from the departments and after the reconstruction in the parent plant (during the reconstruction of the aircraft were given weaker engines Hispano-Suiza 8Aa and the newly designed tail surfaces) have been assigned to the aviation school in Cheb as a training machine.

Training adjustment, W-4a, of course, remained single, he's changed, "just" the engine, the radiator and also the tail surfaces. The attached screenshot is the prototype of the W-4 and the bow of the serial machines.
