North of the city, the U.S. Naval Communications Station Nea Makri, a high-frequency communications base, has been located since the mid-20th century, providing communication with U.S. Navy vessels in the Mediterranean Sea via transmitters located on another, more northerly part of the base at Kato Souli. The base also provided support administration and logistics operations. The base's call sign was NGR. The base was also the deployment site for the 133rd Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB-133) with home base Gulfport.


The US base was made up of several complexes, of which Neo Makri was home to:
- Headquarters
- a support and operations complex
Other parts of the base were transmitters and a microwave reflector at Kato Seoul and water resources at Marathon.


The base was closed in 04/1990 and handed over to the Greek Navy on 17/08/1990.
