Mexican medals reached our territory and it was mainly the Military Merit Medal in silver or bronze. These medals appear on our territory together with the Czech and Moravian veterans who were members of the volunteer corps that accompanied the Archduke and later Emperor Maximilian. The expeditionary corps took part in the battles there and after the failed campaign and the death of the Emperor on 19 June 1867, its surviving members returned to their homeland. And a number of them were awarded these medals.
The medal comes in several types and issues, so we will clarify and explain these medals and their minting.
In late 1863, the French Expeditionary Corps of Emperor Napoleon III under the command of Marshal Achille Bazaine conquered a substantial and most important part of the country. And it created favorable conditions for the fulfillment of the Emperor's vision and plan, to create a monarchy in the territory of Mexico under the influence of France. After prolonged diplomatic negotiations, the Austrian Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian, younger brother of the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I, was chosen as the new ruler of Mexico. On April 10, 1864, the Archduke received the Mexican deputation at his castle of Miramare, near Trieste, and also accepted the offered imperial crown of the distant country. The head of the Mexican delegation was Don Gutierez de Estrada, whom he had already decorated with the Grand Cross of the Order of Our Lady of Guadalupe, an order that had been restored by the Mexican provisional government earlier in 1863.
On 16 April, Maximilian sailed on board the Austrian ship Navara and landed in the port of Veracruz on 16 June 1864. He then celebrated his entry into the Mexican capital on 12 June. The corps of Czech volunteers numbered some 800-900 men and their commanders were Count Thun and Count Khevenhuller, who was also the commander of the Austrian volunteers, the so-called Red Hussars.
These soldiers were to become the core of the future trained army of Imperial Mexico. An army was being formed that also had to be honoured with some visible decoration, and so soon after arriving in Mexico he established his medal of merit. The country was in the throes of civil war, and the fighting did not cease until practically the end of the empire and of all this adventurous enterprise of young Maximilian. Some scholarly publications mention that the medals were established as early as October 14, 1863. However, there is no evidence for this claim. In 1863 the imperial throne had not yet been occupied. Perhaps this claim may be based on the thinking of the then provisional government, which restored the old Mexican Order of Our Lady of Guadalupe, already founded by Emperor Itrubide. At that time, however, and on 29 October 1863, Emperor Napoleon III established his Mexican commemorative medal.
Emperor Maximilian issued a total of two different types of these medals. During the first stay on 14 October, he establishes the Military Merit Medal. The first issue of the medal has a portrait of the young Emperor on the obverse, shown from the left side and looking towards the right edge of the medal. The face of the monarch has a shorter beard, the so-called imperial beard (Keiserbart), which was also worn by the Emperor's brother Franz Joseph I. Emperor Maximilian was born on 6 July 1832 as the second-born son of Archduke Franz Karl, younger brother of Emperor Ferdinand V. His mother was Sophie of Bavaria. He became admiral of the Austrian navy in 1854 and was governor-general of Lombardy-Benatia in 1857. In Mexico, Maximilian begins to wear a flowing beard.
The second edition of the medals is dated 10 March 1865 and it is here that the length of the monarch's beard is distinguished. On these second medals the Emperor is already adorned with a new beard (see picture).
The Military Merit Medal was divided into three grades:
1st class - Gold Medal
2nd class - Silver medal
3rd class - Bronze medal
Type I medals and the 1864 issue have two virtually identical mintages. The first is by the French medal maker Charles Trotin and the second by the medal maker E. Falot (he was also the creator of the second version of the Mexican medal of Emperor Napoleon III.
The second edition of the medals of 10 March 1865 is, after all, slightly more extensive. There are three variants by three medal makers. There is the work of S. C. Navalon, then René Stern, and then an anonymous one with no medalist designation. The fact that the medals differ in size or hanging lug may be attributed to the fact that they were struck in different places, not only during the reign of Emperor Maximilian, but also later for the use of the expeditionary corps. All the medals found in our territory and in our collections can be considered rare.

In addition to his Military Merit Medal, Emperor Maximillian established the same series of Civic Merit Medals (LA MEDALLA DEL MERITO CIVIL). The mintage of these medals is almost identical, only the inscription in the wreath on the reverse side is changed (AL MERITO CIVIL). The medals are again worn on a bright red ribbon. In our conditions and in our collections these medals are almost non-existent, which is also due to the nature of this decoration. One specimen of this medal, which is made in gilded silver, is kept in the depository of the National Museum in Prague. The first minted medals were struck in Paris, others in Mexico. The last xemplars were minted in Vienna.
However, at the magnificent exhibition entitled The Mexican Adventures of Maximilian of Habsburg, in Prague in 1999, the Gold Civic Medal, which is struck in gold, was exhibited. The design in gold is very rare. Only eight (8) of these medals were awarded to Austrian officers of the Imperial Mexican Army, loyal to Emperor Maximilian until his capture. The medal on display was the one signed S. NAVALON. The diameter of the medal is 32.4 mm, the thickness of the medal is 3 mm.
There was also a silver medal on display, again of the NAVALON type. The medal has a diameter of 33 mm with a thickness of 3 mm.
In addition to these extremely rare medals, there was also a Mexican Military Merit Medal, silver, which is 32.4 mm in diameter at 3 mm thick, again of the NAVALON type. Thirty-nine of these silver medals were awarded to Austrian soldiers loyal to the Kaiser until his capture and execution.

Miracles do happen. My colleague Rádjo alerted me to the sale of this rare set in this case by a volunteer (officer) from Germany. The Order's clasp is unusual as the wearer has placed the Prussian medal from the revolutionary year 1848/49 in the first place, another unusual method is chosen for the Mexican Order, the Grand Officer's Cross is on the clasp and the Order's star is worn separately. The last medal of interest to us is the bronze medal of Emperor Maximilian (Navalon type). The whole complex is offered without a set price, so the price will be very high. The picture illustrates the issue of Emperor Maximilian's campaign in Mexico.
Remark:
The Grand Officer of this order was worn as a necklace decoration complete with the Order's star.

The Mexican campaigns of Emperor Maximilian are, and we hope will continue to be, in the attention of younger colleagues. Thanks to Mr. Urban, we have managed to obtain high quality images of other medals from a private Prague collection, which we present here for the use of our collectors. The medals are originals from old phallic collections, so everyone (if he/she acquires such a medal) can compare the originality of his/her own medal. It is quite understandable that we are here for you, so who needs clarification, advice can write directly to our address (www.valka.cz) or SZ (Altmann, Faleristics)

Diskuse

Citace - altmann :

Miracles do happen.

This is truly a beautiful and unique set. I would like to point out here the maker's mark on the reverse of the star - it is the Viennese company Rothe. The inscription here is in Spanish, and the star is also marked on the needle with Rothe's marks.
From the appearance, both the cross on the star and the ordinal decoration in the clutch, including the miniature, look to be made in gold.
The price achieved will also be interesting.

The inscription on the star states that it is the jeweler of His Majesty (S.M.) the Emperor (EMP.) of Austria and also the Shah of Persia. Then the address is probably Vienna Kohlmarkt No. 7.

The jeweller, or jewellery firm which produced the decorations in Vienna.

I'm afraid the set of decorations has already been sold.
Judging by the number and variety of items offered by the seller, I would say it was a junk shop or bazaar. This would also account for why the person in question was not interested in exchanging for other orders. He just sells what he can get his hands on, which this time was the above mentioned beautiful set....unfortunately my price offer was also insufficient Sad
If I get a reply, we will of course publish the price.
