T35E1

After lessons learned from combat in the Philippines, which demonstrated the benefits of sloped armour that better resisted projectiles, it was decided to modify the original T35 design. The hull sides were sloped, the turret and armament were retained, which consisted of the T12 gun (other sources mention the M7 gun) of 76.2 mm (3") calibre. The prototype was in production at Fischer Tank Arsenal from 1/1942. On 4/1942 it was ready for testing together with the T35 type. Here the advantage of the sloping armour was demonstrated and the Type T35E1 was approved for further development. However, the T35E1 had to be subjected to modifications requested by army officials. A new type of turret was to be used, with a modified shape and the fitting of a balancer, and the armour thickness was to be changed (nose max 38mm, sides max 19mm) to save on the overall required weight of the machine. After the modifications were made, such a tank fighter was renamed M10 and approved for series production under this designation.
