Scientific and Production Center "Pribor" officially presented the new 40 mm automatic grenade launcher at the IDEX-2009 exhibition in Abu Dhabi (UAE). The new grenade launcher has a longer range and more than 2 times more effect in the target than the current 30 mm grenade launchers.

The Balkan is based on the essence of the 40 mm grenade launcher TKB-0134 "Kozlik" (ТКБ-0134 "Козлик"), introduced in 1980. The designers aimed to increase the range and firing efficiency over the established 30 mm AGS - 17 "Plamja". The Balkan adopted from its predecessor the recoilless 40 mm shell scheme, where the rear of the shell casing forms an integral cartridge case. At the bottom of the grenade are 4 circular channels for the discharge of gases with the powder charge.

In 2008, state tests were conducted on a 6-pc prototype series, the year of introduction into the armament is not determined, it is expected to be introduced in the next few years.
