3.7 cm FlaK 43 Sfi. auf PzKpfw.II Ausf. L "Luchs"
In the second half of World War II, an acute need for mobile anti-aircraft weapons arose in the German Army. Between 5-9/1943, several discussions took place with Hitler regarding the production of new anti-aircraft tanks. The Inspection 6 department was responsible for development and production. The inconsistent policy in the development of new anti-aircraft tanks led to various considerations and projects. One of them was the Rheinmetall anti-aircraft tank project based on the Pz.Kpfw.II Ausf.L platform. A turret was mounted on a heavily modified and lengthened hull structure, which was to house a Flak 43 37 mm anti-aircraft gun. To reduce the overall height of the vehicle, the turret was semi-recessed into the hull of the vehicle. Due to the increase in weight, which the chassis of a conventional tank could not handle, the platform had to be lengthened by two wheels. The engine was to be the same as that of a conventional tank, so it was reckoned that the under-engined machine would be slightly slower. This resulted in a project that would look more compact than e.g. flak tanks based on the Pz.Kpfw.IV platform. However, the project, which had little chance of success due to the difficult construction, saw the light of day only in the form of a wooden model.
