Focke Wulf Fw 190 C-0 (Fw 190 V16)


Brief History:
Altitude Fw 190 with a DB 603 engine, which was to be supercharged by a turbocharger and the pilot was to sit in a pressurized cabin, such an aircraft was greatly favored by Professor Kurt Tank. Unfortunately, the development of the DB 603 engine was unpopular with RLM and so prof. The tank continued to work with Daimler-Benz engineers, despite the fact that RLM did not assign any priority to this project.
After the Fw 190 V13 accident, prototypes V15 and V16 were involved in the tests. The V16 flew first with the DB 603 Aa engine, which was later replaced by the DB 603 E. The turbocharger was not installed, the power was increased by kits for injecting chemicals into the engine intake, at lower altitudes the MW-50 (water and methanol injection) was used and in at higher altitudes the GM-1 (nitrous oxide) device was used. During the tests it was found that the pilot's body is unreasonably stressed when flying at altitudes above 11,000 m without a pressurized cabin and to reach the planned altitude of 14,000 m it is necessary to use a pressurized cabin, also the engine without turbocharger was not suitable for high altitude operations.
This prototype reached a maximum height of 12,200 m, but managed only once. Later, this prototype was marked together with the others as Fw 190 C-0.

The Fw 190 V32 prototype (W.Nr.: 0057, GH+KV) was first equipped with a DB 603 A engine. The aircraft later received a DB 603 G power unit (and designation Fw 190 V32/U2).
