DEU - Bergen-Belsen

Founded in 1940 as a prisoner of war camp until 1942.


From 1942 to 1945 as a concentration camp.


In April 1945, an important Czech man, Josef Čapek, died here.


The concentration camp was liberated by the British Army on April 15, 1945, after the mallow was razed to the ground, due to typhus and infectious diseases.

The last remaining barrack hut in Belsen concentration camp is incinerated in a special ceremony to mark the camp's destruction by the British Army, 21 May 1945.
