IRQ - Iracká armáda [1958-2003]

Iraqi Army
Iraqi ground troops after the overthrow of the monarchy:

After the successful military coup, the next stage of the construction of the Iraqi army began. During this period, the army participated in several demonstrations of strength and military conflicts that resulted in the Iraq-Iran War, the invasion of Kuwait, and finally the dissolution of the army in 2003.

In 1961, the Iraqi army participated in a show of force against neighboring Kuwait (a large-scale exercise near the Kuwaiti border) that saw a deterioration in relations with Britain, whose troops were stationed in Kuwait. Between 1961 and 1970 there were also large-scale military operations against the Kurds in the north of the country. Following Saddam Hussein's rise to power, a further major modernisation of the army began, which eventually led to conflict with Iran. By 1981, the Iraqi army had reached 200,000 soldiers in 12 divisions and 3 separate brigades. By 1985, the army had reached 500,000 soldiers in 23 divisions and 9 separate brigades. In 1991, just before the invasion of Kuwait, the ground forces totalled 955,000 troops in 40 infantry and 7 tank divisions and 20 self-supporting brigades. These volumes were concentrated in 7 army corps. In addition, the Iraqi ground forces also had 6 special brigades of the Republican Guard, Saddam Hussein's elite forces.
