A30 Challenger

History of the creation
Commonly used in 1942, the Cromwell type, while agile and decently armoured, by early 1942 it was clear that its 6-pounder gun would soon be inadequate for the new German tanks. And so the year saw the selection of the excellent 17-pounder gun as the new tank weapon. The tank's Cromwell turret proved to be too small for such a large, powerful and heavy gun. As the expected size, weight and circulation turret of the new turret exceeded the capabilities of the existing chassis, a new chassis had to be designed.
This was solved by extending the chassis by one running wheel. The new turret featured a relatively tall and slender silhouette and perpendicular walls, As such a turret would have cost the lives of too many British soldiers it was decided to use the existing and decidedly more suitable Sherman tank, re-armed with a Firefly version fitted with the same gun. However, in 1943, for emergency reasons, it was decided to produce a production run of 260 units.

Armament
A 17-pounder towed anti-tank gun of 76.2 mm calibre, the projectile weighing 7.71 kg and having a muzzle velocity of 884 m/s (barrel length L/55.1) penetrated 130 mm armour inclined at 30° at 915 m.
The tank version was designated 77 mm OQF Mk. 2, the weight of the weapon was 681 kg, the barrel length was L/49.2, and the chamber was modified for shorter but wider cartridges (easier handling in the confined conditions of the tank turret. The standard anti-tank missile reached a velocity of 792 m/s and penetrated 109 mm of armour inclined at 30° at a distance of 455 m.

Combat service
The pieces produced became part of tank regiments equipped with Cromwell tanks deployed in 1944-45 in northwestern Europe, for which they provided anti-tank protection.

Further development of the type
A30 Challenger II - with a lower turret and lower overall weight, ended up as a prototype only.

Despite the relatively large size of the turret, it was not possible to implement the (probably original) intention of the BESA machine gun as a coupled main armament on the A30 Challenger - therefore the 7.62 mm Browning machine gun was used

The vehicle (T271904) in the above picture bears typical features of the type from the beginning of production: It has no "applique" armour on the hull nose and sloping plates of the turret armour, nor the arc strip of armour protecting the turret turret from hit and wedging hazards. The gun has a muzzle brake with square holes, and there is no auxiliary frame sight installed on the turret ceiling in front of the commander's hatch to guide the gunner quickly to the detected target.

The markings (the red-yellow-black emblem on the turret sides) on the vehicle belong to the Gunnery School at Lulworth Camp, where the vehicle underwent gunnery trials at the same time as further extensive tests at the FVPE (Fighting Vehicle Proving Establishment) in Chertsey...
Based on their results, measures were later applied in production to increase the vehicle's resistance to tank and anti-tank fire.

Because the risk of the turret being wedged by a (tank) shell in combat was considered high, a technical feature unique at the time was applied to the design of the vehicle: the turret as such was pivotally mounted on the bottom of the hull (the main supporting element was therefore not the usual ball track in the hull ceiling) and the turret could be (without the need to leave the vehicle) lifted from the inside by a mechanical jack, thus increasing the gap between the turret armour and the hull ceiling armour so that such a wedging could be released.

T271904 likely include (from the rc point of view) among the best photographically documented Challengery. In the course of the tests in the FVPE and in the Gunnery School was taken very extensive and quite detailed photographs, covering this vehicle, indeed from all points of view including the image of the vehicle from a bird's-eye view (small image, but still) and capturing all the details necessary for the construction of the model....
