The development of the Matilda infantry tank began in 1934, when Gen. Hobart made a request for the construction of an infantry support tank in two different versions - the first version was a tank armed only with a machine gun, the second, heavier version envisaged artillery armament with additional machine gun armament. In the end, it was finally decided that only the light version armed with a machine gun would be implemented.

The serial machines (139 in total) were ordered in three production batches. The first one, numbering 60 pieces, was ordered in April (Apr) 1937, the second, also numbering 60 pieces, 10 days later (some sources say that both orders were realized only in 1938). In January (Jan) 1939 another 19 pieces were ordered.
That the Matilda I was not exactly what the army needed at the time was already clear during the trials. The main drawback was the inefficient engine, but the two-man crew also appeared to be problematic (undersized). On the other hand, the machine was well armored. From this dôwater, efforts were made to make improvements to the tank that would increase its combat value, but since the cost of the modifications was higher than the development of a new tank, the upgrades were abandoned in favor of developing a new tank, branded as the A12.

Tank with a two-man crew was powered by a Ford V8 of the output of 70 horsepower and used the running gear developed on the basis of the experience with the light tanks produced in Vickersově factory in the early thirties. Total production of 140 tanks, called the Matilda I and manufactured from April 1937 to August 1940, it was armed with one machine gun caliber 7.7 mm (0,303 inch), it was later a few dozen machines přezbrojeno machine gun caliber 12,7 mm (0.5 inches). These weapons were placed in a cast turret, first used by the british tank. The armor reached a thickness of from 13 to 78 mm. The Tank was deployed with units of the british expeditionary force in France in 1940, several tanks were used during the tests with odminovacími plows Coulter and Fowler, other come to an end at the training units..
